Information for patients requiring an abdominal ultrasound

Abdominal Ultrasound

Ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound scans do not use radiation. Ultra sound scans can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as the blood flow through blood vessels.

How should I prepare for the ultrasound scan?

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your exam. You may be given a gown to wear during the procedure
You will be asked not to eat anything for several hours prior to your appointment time.

How is the ultrasound scan performed?

You will be positioned on the ultrasound examination table, usually lying flat on your back.
A clear water-based gel is applied to you abdomen to help the transducer make contact with the body and eliminate air pockets between the transducer and the skin. The sonographer then presses the transducer firmly against the skin and sweeps it over your abdomen.
Your appointment is usually completed within 20 minutes.

What will I experience during and after the procedure?

Ultrasound scans are generally painless, fast and easy.
Though the scanning itself causes no pain, there may be some discomfort from having to remain still for several minutes.

Who interprets the results and how do I get them?

The sonographer doing your ultrasound is unable to give you any information about your images during your appointment.
A radiologist with expertise in supervising and interpreting radiology examinations will review the images and send a report to your referring doctor who will discuss the results with you.
Your ultrasound scan images and report will be available to your referring doctor within 24 hours of your appointment time.
