Patient information for breast core biopsy procedure

Core Biopsy - Breast

Your Doctor has referred you for a breast biopsy. You have probably had a mammogram and an Ultrasound already. Today you will have another ultrasound and a biopsy.

Procedure

The procedure is performed under Ultrasound control. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. A needle is inserted into the lesion and tissue is taken to be sent to the laboratory for identification. The time taken is generally from  15-20 minutes and is relatively painfree.

Post Care

After the procedure you will have a small dressing applied and an ice pack placed inside your bra to help reduce bruising. The results will be available for your Dr in 2-3 days. Make an appointment with your referring doctor.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask the Radiologist who is performing the procedure, there will also be an ultrasonographer, who manages the ultrasound machine and a nurse in attendance.
