Patient information for fine needle aspirate procedure

Fine Needle Aspirate

Your Doctor has referred you for a fine needle aspiration. You have probably had an ultrasound already. Today you will have another ultrasound and a fine needle aspiration.

Procedure

The procedure is performed under ultrasound control .  A fine needle is inserted  into the lesion and cells are taken to be sent to the laboratory for identification.  The time taken is generally from 15-20 minutes.

Post Care

After the procedure you may have a small dressing or  bandaid applied. The results will be available for your Dr in 3-5 days. Please make an appointment with your referring doctor to get your results.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask the Radiologist who is performing the procedure. There will also be a ultrasonographer who manages the ultrasound machine and a nurse in attendance.
