Patient information for steroid injections

Steroid Injection

Your Doctor has referred you for a bursal injection. The bursa is a space between the tendons and the muscle which can become thickened or inflamed and may cause pain and movement restriction.

Procedure

The procedure is performed under ultrasound control. A fine needle is inserted into the bursa and local anaesthetic and steroid combination is injected.  The time taken is generally from  15-20 minutes.

Post care

After the procedure  you may have significant pain relief almost immediately. This local anaesthetic will wear off in a couple of hours and it will take a couple of days for the steroid to start working..  We suggest that you do take things easy in the next few days.  By all means perform your normal duties but avoid  anything you don’t normally do which is strenuous, and may cause an injury to your joint.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask the Radiologist who is performing the procedure, there will also be an ultrasonographer who manages the ultrasound machine, and a nurse in attendance
