A Bone Densitometry is a type of low radiation x-ray used to measure the density (thickness) of your bones, the higher the density, the stronger the bones

What is DEXA?

Also known as a DMB or DEXA, a Bone Densitometry is a type of low radiation x-ray used to measure the density (thickness) of your bones, the higher the density, the stronger the bones. The scan is used for a range of conditions and investigations such as the diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia and if or how well a patient is responding to certain treatments.

Results of a Bone Densitometry can help ascertain the risk of fractures in the future which can help your doctor choose the correct course of treatment for individuals. The test requires you to lie on a bed for 15-30 minutes whilst a camera takes the required images. It is pain-free, quick and easy. Not all patients are eligible for a Medicare rebate, there are very specific requirements. To find out more, please contact us on (03) 5440 3500
